Course intel

Why Berlin is fast — and where it still bites

More marathon world records have been set in Berlin than anywhere else. The reasons are structural: the whole course sits inside a 17-metre elevation band, the roads are wide with long straights and few sharp turns, and late-September mornings usually start cool. Nothing on the route forces you off your pace — which means the only thing that can is you.

Km 0–1
Start on Straße des 17. Juni; the field splits around the Siegessäule (Victory Column).
Km 22–28
The long, barely visible rise through Schöneberg to the course high point near Wilder Eber.
Km 42
Through the Brandenburg Gate — with about 400 m still to run to the finish line.
  1. 01

Even splits are the whole strategy

There's no hill to bank time against and no descent to win it back. Settle at goal pace by km 3 and hold it; the crowded first kilometres around the Siegessäule are not the place to fight for seconds.

  2. 02

Respect the km 22–28 false flat

It tops out at only 0.4%, so you won't see it — you'll just notice the same pace costing more. Run it by effort, accept a few seconds per km, and take them back on the gentle drop from km 30 to 34.

  3. 03

    Don't sprint the Gate

The Brandenburg Gate is not the finish. Runners who kick at the first sight of it tie up with 400 m to go. Hold form through the Gate, then empty the tank.
